The role of rhetoric and linguistic structures in revealing fabricated hadiths

The fabrication of hadiths emerged early in Islamic history, The reasons for this were political. Fabricators worked hard to glorify certain figures and denigrate others who opposed them. They used well-known chains of transmission (Isnad) to convince the public. However, the fabrication of these chains did not escape the notice of hadith scholars who exposed their false Isnad and explained the reasons for that. During the Umayyad era, political strife increased, and various sects and groups emerged that resorted to lying about the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) for cheap interest and to prove some of their corrupt beliefs. The influx of many nations into Islam also contributed to the proliferation of fabricated hadiths, which revolved around the virtues of certain ancient cities in Iran and Central Asia. Opportunistic and ignorant individuals were encouraged to promote their goods and foodstuffs by fabricating hadiths attributed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The scholars of Hadith developed a precise methodology for identifying fabricated Hadiths through the study of chains of transmission. They authored books on the biographies of transmitters, and they explained the hidden defects in the false chains of transmission that leave no doubt that Hadith is fabricated and false. Most of their effort was focused on the chain of transmission, which is the basis for judging Hadiths. However, they also established rules for identifying fabricated texts (Matn), such as their contradiction of the explicit verses of the Holy Qur’an and the authentic Sunnah, the contradiction between the beginning and the end of the Hadith, contradiction of rational axioms, contradiction of some historical facts, and finally, the awkwardness of their style and the weakness of their language and eloquence. This paper focuses on the linguistic aspects of fabricated hadiths and the efforts of scholars in identifying weak styles, disjointed sentences, strange and objectionable expressions, and contrived phrases. It examines the role of all these factors in determining whether a hadith is fabricated or not. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was the master of eloquence and fluency, and it is inconceivable that he would utter weak or inarticulate speech. Prophetic hadiths are authoritative in language, grammar, rhetoric, and the art of concise and precise artistic expression. Scholars have written books on the rare words in hadiths, just as they have written books on the rare words in the Holy Quran, and these books demonstrate the magnificence and eloquence of the Prophet's eloquence.
